Sea, Sex and Sun.
If you ever found yourself on a big boat in Paris, chances are you were at a party called été d’amour.
The Frenchies behind that lunacy are now invading a freedom-loving country (U.S.A.) – New York, specifically – and their make-pahrrtee headquarters will be Andrew WK and James Murphy’s new place Santos’ Playhouse santospartyhouse.com (100 Lafayette St.), starting the last Friday in June. Read below for their super French explanation. They’ve taken inspiration from the Godfather of Making Ze Love, Serge Gainsbourg, a man who, despite having a weird fucked-up face and being a raging boozaholic, was the coolest motherfucker around.
Sea, Sex and Sun. A good definition of the summer, thanks to Gainsbourg. “Tes petits seins de bakelite me sur excitent” he was singing. Summer 1978. Thirty years ago! People were dancing at club Palace in Paris. Not sure if Studio 54 was still open - but yes, it probably was. Whatever. My point is that we are the kind of French who love to sound English, or to sound kind of French when we speak English if you follow me. So when we were looking for a new name for our summer Parisian parties, we were like, why not “été d’amour”. Ok, that sounds French, not English - but it was a literal translation of a huge cliché in English, “summer of love” - a cliché yes, but a nice one, because this was used in 1967 and in 1988, in San Francisco and Ibiza, two great times and places to have fun with good music (and make history). The first “été d’amour” took place in summer 2002 on a huge boat, in the heart of Paris. It has been great fun since then. Hundred of djs & live shows, millions of flirts & kisses, break ups & make ups, billions of smiles (and not so many tears)… Under the sun, facing the wind, on the water: that sounds like ideal summer, right? And this summer, on top of the Paris institution, we will have our “été d’amour” in New York, in Santos’ Playhouse. We expect sea, sex and sun… and a lot of romance, because, yes, we’re kind of French.
