The foam seat pictured above has been sculpted in the likeness of mythical Greek hero Hercules, who according to the theme song from the 1963 cartoon series The Mighty Hercules, possessed “the strength of ten ordinary men”. Sounds impressive…til you stand him next to Sayyed Muhamed Ahmad Abdallah, who claims to have the strength of 30 000 men - or 260 horsepower.

In this incredulous interview with Al-Mihwar TV in Egypt, Sayyed calmly explains how his exceptional strength exempts him from working in either the private or public sector or entering police stations or jails. He also refuses to shake one of the interviewer’s hands so as not to hurt him with his might.

Married to four wives, he has sired 35 children and says he engages in sex 15 times a day. When asked what kind of diet he must maintain to sustain this kind of staggering prowess, he replies he “drinks melted butter and eats raw mutton”, but does not recommend the practice for a ‘regular human as it could make him sick and die’.

During the interview Sayyed puts his extraordinary power into context: ‘A regular human being doesn’t even come close to one horsepower. One horsepower equals the strength of 360 men in excellent shape’ (that’s mechanical horsepower by the way). He then tears a coin in half with his bare hands as a small demonstration of his brawn.

And thennnnn — we learn that Sayyed’s father’s strength was 840 horsepower.

(looooong low whistle)

All hail the Power of Horses. I guess.

Sadly, these classic babies are no longer available on the retail market (thanks for nothing Texas Instruments) but it’s ‘09, so whatever speak n spell, my new favorite place on the internet can teach me how to properly pronounce boobies not only in English, but Kurdish, Danish, Tagalog, Arabic and more!

This is how it works, go to forvo.com type in the word you want to know how to properly pronounce (caveat: you must know how to spell the word in that language) and voila, a pre-recorded voice will softly cry out the correct pronounciation of “boobies” (or whatever word you picked) in that language. Magic!

(again, just so we’re clear, boobies is NOT the only word you can ask for - that’s just me. you can ask for pretty much any word if it’s been recorded. you can also add a word if you know it and it’s not already up)

Use it in conjunction with frengly.com if you don’t know how to spell the word in the language you want. Magic! Again!

Alright! Derweze (aka Darvaza) is a tiny Turkmenistanian village with one biiiiiiiig attraction.

Rich in natural gas, in 1971 a crack team of geologists came prospecting and accidentally drilled upon a cavern full of the stuff. The ground underneath the drilling rig fell out (whoops) leaving in its place a giant crater roughly 60m wide where today, 38 years on, the gases still illuminate and burn. Very Dante’s Inferno-ish the locals playfully refer to it as ‘The Door to Hell’. You can see it in action here.

Meanwhile on the flipside, the annual Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival is kicking off in northern China! In Harbin! No shit! Check out some of the glowing works here.
